Chinese characters for children: families and a build-it game
The first 100 characters now have two new ways to learn, made for children from 5 to 12: character families and a game that builds characters from their parts.
What you can do now
- Open Families and tap a part like 女, 口 or 木 to see every character built from it, and guess what they share before peeking.
- Play Build it: put two parts together to find the character (女 + 子 = 好), or break a character into its parts, with stars for every right answer.
- Turn off English or pinyin to practise thinking in Chinese, and tap any blurred word to peek.
- On a phone, tap a character to open it full screen with a bigger box to write in.
Why we made this change
Children remember characters better when they see why they look the way they do, and start to guess new ones from parts they know. Memorising each shape on its own is slower and less fun.
