What people really say, in every language

Textbook phrases that locals rarely use have been swapped for the ones you will actually hear.

What you can do now

  • Vietnamese: greet people with "chào" plus anh, chị or em, and say goodbye with "hẹn gặp lại nha".
  • Japanese: じゃあね for bye, and 英語、大丈夫ですか? to ask if someone speaks English.
  • Thai: บ๊ายบาย (bye-bye) for goodbye. Spanish: "hasta luego" when you leave a shop.
  • Tips now point out the textbook version, so you recognise it if you see it.

Why we made this change

Textbook phrases mark you out and can sound stiff or even odd. Hundred Words exists to teach the words you will hear at a counter or in a taxi.
