Taiwanese Hokkien · your first trip to Taiwan
What you'll say, and what you'll hear back
Ten everyday moments. Each line teaches one of your 100 words inside a sentence you will really use. There is no audio: phones and browsers have no Taiwanese voice yet, so read the romanisation out loud.
Draft: First draft. A native Taiwanese speaker has not checked these lines yet, and some wording varies between north and south. Tell us if something sounds off.
Saying hello to the neighbours

Taiwanese is spoken most in the south (Tainan, Kaohsiung) and by older people everywhere. Young people in Taipei mostly speak Mandarin, but almost everyone understands these greetings.

Taiwanese Hokkien questions travellers ask
What is Taiwanese Hokkien?
Taiwanese (台語, Tâi-gí) is a Southern Min language, separate from Mandarin. It is spoken most in southern Taiwan and by older people across the island. Most people in Taiwan also speak Mandarin, but a few words of Taiwanese at a market or temple make people smile.
What Taiwanese should I learn first?
Start with 食飽未? (tsia̍h-pá buē?, have you eaten?, used as hello), 多謝 (to-siā, thank you), 歹勢 (pháinn-sè, sorry or excuse me), 偌濟錢? (guā-tsē tsînn?, how much?) and 我聽無 (guá thiann bô, I don't understand).
How is Taiwanese written?
Hundred Words uses the Han characters recommended by Taiwan's Ministry of Education, with Tâi-lô romanisation underneath so you can say each line. Many speakers never write Taiwanese at all, so the romanisation is the part to read out loud.
Why is there no audio for Taiwanese?
Phones and browsers do not have a built-in Taiwanese voice, and playing Mandarin instead would teach the wrong sounds. Recorded audio from a native speaker is on the roadmap.
How long does it take to learn 100 Taiwanese words?
About two weeks at eight words a day. Hundred Words saves your progress on your device, and the drills bring back the words you get wrong until you get them right.
