Hear China the way Shanghai and Beijing say it
The China scenes now use Shanghai wording and point out the local accents you will hear in Shanghai and Beijing.
What you can do now
- Shanghai scenes say 这里 and 哪里, the way people there do, instead of the Beijing 这儿.
- Notes in the scenes explain the Shanghai accent (是 can sound like "sì"), a little Shanghainese like 侬好, and the Beijing "r" ending you will hear on the train north.
Why we made this change
The Mandarin you hear in Shanghai does not sound like a textbook or like Beijing. Knowing the accent in advance makes the first conversations far less confusing.
