Taiwanese Hokkien, as its own language

A first draft of Taiwanese (台語): 100 words in 10 scenes, from greeting the neighbourhood aunties to the temple and the night market.

What you can do now

  • Han characters with Tâi-lô romanisation, so you can read every line out loud.
  • Scenes where you really hear Taiwanese: the morning market, a rice shop, a temple, a taxi in the south, and beers with new friends.
  • There is no audio, because phones and browsers have no Taiwanese voice. The page says so, and the drills skip listening questions.

Why we made this change

Older people and much of southern Taiwan speak Taiwanese first. A few words of it gets a warmer welcome than perfect Mandarin.
